At age 13, my daughter Rohan moved to Denmark without speaking the language. This week, she completed year 13 of school — gymnasium — in Danish, in a very academically demanding program. And Danish is a terribly hard language to learn. Seriously.

Yesterday, after teaching a yoga class, I found myself sitting for an unplanned coffee with an extraordinary woman I know. Mallorca is very special to me. I’ve been asking myself why, as I sit here on another beautiful island—Ithaca—on a summer holiday with my family.

First, I’ll say that sometimes this instruction is enough. It works when someone knows exactly what it means—not just in theory, but in their body. In my experience, though, most people don’t have that kind of embodied understanding, especially if they’re experiencing pelvic imbalance, pain, or weakness.

I’ve been told many times that I should avoid scaring potential clients or students away with poses that are too “impressive.” After all, my specialty is pelvic floor health—gentle and effective exercises, I say. And branding, if I want my business to actually grow, is important. I should be clear. Consistent. An expert of one thing.
